Prague-Vienna Greenways Main Bike Route
When biking between Prague and Vienna, you follow a somewhat different route than if you walk.
Below the "Bike Rental" table, we've listed many of the larger and smaller
towns that you pass through on your journey. Grab a map and follow along!
To see the entire route and to print biking directions for the main route go to the Greenways Interactive Map.
You can also print individual sections with other information about Greenways organizations and
selected local community projects that are worth visiting (look at the menu in the upper right).
If you are spending any time in Prage, check out the
Prague Bike Routes Map.
A very useful publication (PDF format) is the European Cycling Lexicon, a compilation in 24 languages with names for bicyle parts and accessories, and useful phrases while touring.
The Prague-Vienna Greenways bike route is a part of the larger bike trail
system in the Czech Republic and Europe. The surface varies from asphalt and crushed
limestone to packet dirt. You travel on II and III class roads with little
or no traffic, and on trails and dirt roads. The terrain varies from
flat to rolling hills, through open fields, wooded areas and small
villages, along rivers and lakes. On only a few ocassions does the route
cross a class I road.
The Prague-Vienna Greenways bike route was created by the Greenways-Zelene
Stezky civic organization. In 1997, a grant from the McDonnel Douglas company
made possible the completion of marking of the entire bike route in the Czech
Republic (350 km/217 mi). The Austrian part (90 km/35 mi) had been marked in the past.
A website of long distance bike trails (cyklotrasy) in the Czech Republic (in Czech) is available.
Brief instructions for non-Czech speakers:
-
Goto the Cykloserver website
- You are presented with a zoomed in view of the area in Prague where the Prague-Vienna Greenway begins
- Look for the Greenways leaf symbol to follow the route
- A list of the towns, trail route numbers (slo trasy), distances and links to maps will appear
- Click on any globe symbol for a closeup map of that section
- The ShoCart Map will open with your selected region. First, in the upper right-hand corner click on
"velká mapa" (large map), then make sure the scale is set to 1:50000 on the scale bar above (put the mouse pointer
over each tick mark to see it's value)
- The magenta-colored routes are the numbered bike trails

Bike rental: ("pujcovna kol"):
There are many places to rent bicycles along the Czech Greenways. The average cost
for a hybrid bike is about US$12 a day in Prague, and US$7 per day in smaller towns in the Czech Republic. Often, pesions, hotels
and campgrounds will provide bike rentals for guests. In Austria, look for a "Farrad am Bahnhof"
(Bicycles at the Train Station) sign. For other bike rental information, contact
Infocenters (Infocentrum) in each town.
